The 69th International Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja, declared of International Tourist Interest and Medal of Cultural Merit of the Generalitat Valenciana has already begun its journey with an extraordinary gala in which has risen to the stage of the Municipal Theatre the best of the musical quarry torrevejense, as is the Symphony choir of the Municipal Choir School under the direction of Cuban teacher Selena Cancino Escobar. The Inaugural Gala has been completed with the warmth of the singer Pasión Vega, invited by the Patronato del Certamen to open this edition and who has come to join his voice with the Sinfonía choir to interpret one of the most universal habaneras: ‘La Paloma’ by Sebastián Iradier, premiering an arrangement of his pianist, Jacob Sureba. The artist has highlighted the deep joy she feels to be reunited with Torrevieja where she has performed previously and has put in value the way in which the city “cares about keeping and transmitting the tradition of the habanera that so successfully interprets its Choir School”.

The mayor of Torrevieja and President of the Municipal Board, Eduardo Dolon, has precisely put in value “the pride that is for torrevejenses have guaranteed the continuity of the transmission of the genre of habanera with the work carried out by the Choir School, not only with the Symphony choir, which is its flagship, but also with all their younger groups that instill from childhood love for the cultural sample that identifies the city worldwide. In this line has also thanked the commitment of the choirs of Torrevieja that are “the true supporters of the continuity of the contest since 1955. The mayor has conveyed that he hopes to have the support of the Generalitat Valenciana in the cultural and tourist promotion of the Contest. In relation to the choral competition, Dolon has predicted “an edition with very high qualitative expectations, which consolidates the normalization in this type of musical events after the pandemic of COVID19”. An idea that has also agreed the vice president of the Board, José Antonio Quesada, in his appearance before the accredited media.

The presenter, Elena Sánchez, who has returned to Torrevieja after having presented the editions from 2017 to 2019, has emphasized the ties that already bind her to the city of salt through a Contest “recognized worldwide and with an indisputable cultural and musical prestige”.

This Tuesday will take place a gala with a strong torrevejense flavor with two distinct parts: on the one hand, will be staged the stage-musical recreation of ‘The Gift: the story of the Habanera’, and then go on stage the choir and orchestra Maestro Ricardo Lafuente and torrevejense Francisco Vallejos choir.
