Salzburg, 1938. Maria Rainer is a young novice at Nonnberf Abbey whose free spirit and passion for music clash with the rigid rules of the congregation. Her continuous escapades in the nearby mountains provoke the bewilderment of the rest of the nuns, who wonder if Maria is destined to be one of them.
To help her find her way, the mother abbess decides to send Maria to serve as governess to the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a former soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army who has recently become a widower. Upon arriving at her new home, Maria discovers that the captain has become a sullen man since the death of his wife and that the children are being brought up under strict discipline with no room for fun.
Upon arriving at her new home, Maria discovers that the Captain has imposed a rigid discipline on her household, leaving little room for fun. However, with her infectious joy and passion for music, Maria manages to win the children’s hearts, filling the house with laughter, song and love, but she also begins to awaken feelings for the captain that make her doubt her future at the abbey. Meanwhile, the situation in the country is becoming increasingly complicated due to the rise of Nazism. and the imminent annexation of Austria to the Third Reich.
The Sound of Music, in its new Theatre Properties production, dazzles not only with its emotional story and unforgettable music by Rodgers & Hammerstein, but also with a majestic set design that transports the audience to Austria in the 1930’s. Each setting is carefully designed to envelop the audience in the atmosphere of the classic, from the convent to the Von Trapp villa and the majestic Alps.
