I fell in love with Lola Herrera encounter after encounter. Fascinated by her charisma, moved by her lucidity, hallucinated by her curiosity and desire.
It was then a matter of finding a material that would be at the height of such a woman, that would somehow represent everything she wanted to talk about. And I with her.
The Road to Mecca, by Athol Fugard, is inspired by a real woman, Helen Martins, who rebelled against all the strata of her time. A being who pursues desire, the light of inspiration that does not correspond to any age or generation. Someone who prefers questions to certainties, who values her freedom and autonomy in the face of her time and the world around her.
As I read it, I heard Lola’s voice beating in each text. Without transcendence, the desire to live freely and intensely floats in the air.
We wanted to put together a cast with whom the trip would be enriching and enjoyable, because we all feel that this will be a totally transformative experience.
