Grammar: on language and society

This Thursday, March 27, as part of the closing of the V National Theatre Competition, “Raúl Ferrández”, will premiere at the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja at 20:00 pm the play “La Gramática”, written and directed by Ernesto Caballero. It is a play that reflects with humor and intelligence about the limits of language and its impact on our society, with a first class cast headed by María Adánez and José Troncoso.

In La Gramática, a cleaning worker at the Royal Spanish Academy suffers an unexpected accident that turns her, without looking for it, into a scholar of language and grammar. Her sudden mastery of syntactic correctness and her obsession with language begin to affect her daily life, to the point that a prestigious neuroscientist offers to “deprogram” her. Through this premise, the play raises profound questions: Can linguistic knowledge marginalize a person, and is it possible to unlearn what has never been learned?

The play features the stellar presence of María Adánez, one of the most outstanding actresses on the Spanish stage, with a prolific career in theater, film and television. Known for her work in iconic comedies such as Aquí no hay quien viva and La que se avecina, Adánez has demonstrated her versatility in theatrical productions such as El eunuco and Divinas palabras.

At his side, José Troncoso, actor and director with a solid career in theater and recognized for his talent in directing and dramaturgy. He has participated in projects of great impact such as Con lo bien que estábamos (Ferretería Esteban) and Lo nunca visto, as well as being one of the key figures in the renewal of the contemporary Spanish stage.

With La Gramática, Ernesto Caballero brings to the stage a sharp and vibrant play that invites us to reflect on the use and abuse of language in our society, through an intelligent, funny and witty staging.
