At the age of nineteen, a Jewish doctor tells him about faraway Persia, where there is a medical school run by the best physician of the time: Avicenna.

While traveling in a caravan through the desert he meets Mary, a Scottish girl who will remind him of his origins and will mark his plans for the future. Nothing will be easy for Rob in Isfahan, neither passing himself off as a Jew to be allowed to study nor his relationship with the Shah, who becomes infatuated with his friendship.
